No measurement is ever completely exact; there is always a degree of doubt about its accuracy. This degree of doubt is quantified by the uncertainty. The effects of measurement uncertainty manifest themselves across all industrial sectors, resulting in significant financial exposure. In the field of flow measurement, measurement uncertainty is particularly important when the fluid being metered is of high value where small errors in flow measurement could potentially cost the operator large amounts of money.

The NPL Digital Manufacturing Group have been developing techniques to support the introduction of Machine Learning in smaller manufacturing businesses and would like to run trials in existing businesses that have a high degree of confidence in their internal quality systems, to see if applied machine learning might be able to augment or automate some of the steps in the qualification of component parts during manufacture, post manufacture and post assembly.

The CEN and CENELEC General Assemblies, meeting on 25 November, voted overwhelmingly to support BSI’s continued membership of CEN and CENELEC. This decision follows the adoption of new statutes in June which created a new type of full member for countries that find themselves in the UK’s position of exiting the EU, and then the successful audit in August of BSI’s compliance with the rules of the new member type.

Following the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) General Assembly vote on Thursday 25^th November UKAS have announced that they will become Category B members. The exact definition and rights of Category B membership are still to be published. Both the Articles of Association and Rules of Procedure are currently with the EA legal team and are expected to be published in early 2022.

The UK Government, through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), is seeking feedback from Industry on the guidance they have issued on the UKCA Mark. BEIS has developed a short survey of just 4 questions which should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.
